Valerie Branch: Wolf Trap PreK/K STEM Residency

Wolf Trap PreK/K STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) residencies are designed to be highly collaborative and creative partnerships between teaching artists and educators to improve students’ skills in science and math through engagement in the arts. The arts and sciences are natural partners, sharing habits of mind that develop creative problem-solving, imaginative thinking, and transference of skills and knowledge to new experiences.

During the program, teaching artists and teachers are actively engaged in implementing strategies and content that correlate fundamentals of dance, drama, and music with STEM learning outcomes in areas such as the five senses, life cycles, earth science, physical science, scientific inquiry, and the engineering design process. Teachers will learn effective ways to engage students in participatory activities that involve all the senses and encourage critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration.

All Wolf Trap Teaching Artists are trained through the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning through the Arts in their evidence-based model and early childhood practices.
