Arts Explorations@2x

for Baltimore City Public Schools Students + Families

Explore words and sounds with Mr. Root! Discover how to sound out CVC words while learning about beatboxing and finding a steady beat.

Listen. Really listen. Have a seat, close your eyes, and take in all the sounds you hear. Whether you’re out on the playground, at the beach, walking in the woods, or simply resting at home, there’s music all around you. All the musical elements are there in the soundscapes we live in: beat, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics, and melody.

Stepping is a percussive art form created by African Americans on the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. In this lesson with Mr. Ryan from SOLE Defined, you will turn your bodies into a human drum learning basic stepping movement and beat patterns. Beginner movers in grades PreK and K will explore math elements while creating beat patterns and musicality in their own space.

If you like to play “pretend,” you’re already an actor! Join Ms. Nell in exploring some of the tools and skills actors use, including their voices, their bodies, and their imaginations. Together we’ll explore the fable “The Lion and the Mouse,” and you’ll put on a show right from your own home!

Do you like to make pictures? Have you ever thought about making a picture with fabric and thread? Now you can! With this series, you will get your own Create A Creature kit. What is a creature? A creature is any living thing: an animal, a bird, a fish, or an insect. In this series, Ms. Herbert will guide you through the steps to create your own colorful creature using felt and simple stitching techniques.

We all have a story to tell! Join Mr. Sam as we create a puppet theater, learn how to tell a story, design puppets, and perform our very own puppet show. The possibilities are endless!

Poetry is all around us! Join spoken word artist Mecca to explore how to start writing and learn new ways to express yourself.

Travel to Uganda with Mr. Ssuuna as he teaches you an African dance! Learn traditional steps and the story behind why this dance was created. Get ready to move and have fun!

How can we use art to represent our true selves while staying socially, politically, and economically relevant? Through this series, we will explore five different established artists—each one of whom either studied, was raised, or lived in Baltimore—and their art styles! Let the artist in you come alive!

Has looking at a piece of art ever made you feel an emotion? Have you ever created art to express yourself? Join Ms. Whitney to learn about Abstract Expressionism and how you can explore your identity and emotions through art-making.
