In Rhythm, Rhyme & Poetry, students explore the power of words through the lens of spoken word and Hip-Hop lyricism. This interactive residency uses rhythm and rhyme as bridges between literary writing and performance, helping students discover their creative voices while strengthening reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Through guided writing exercises and performance activities, students learn how to use figurative language — including similes, metaphors, imagery, and alliteration as tools of self-expression. Each session builds skills in creative writing, listening, and public speaking. By the end of the residency, students will have written and performed original poems or rhymes that reflect their thoughts, identity, and imagination — demonstrating how literacy, rhythm, and creativity come together to make meaning and impact.
This residency is intended for students in 2nd-8th grade, but can be adapted for students in K-12.
Residencies are tailored to your needs but may include:
A kick-off assembly (performing arts only)
A required orientation meeting and planning session
A set of workshops for classes of up to 25 students each
A student culminating or sharing event
An optional evaluation meeting (an evaluation is required for grant funded programs)
