SOLE Defined

About the Artist

SOLE Defined is a high-energy percussive dance company redefining tap, body percussion and sand dance through rhythm, storytelling, and culture. Founded by Guggenheim Fellow Ryan K. Johnson and acclaimed artist Quynn Johnson, SOLE Defined blends African-American traditions with global influences to create performances that inspire, educate, and entertain. From The Doris Duke Theater at Jacob’s Pillow to community stages, we engage audiences of all ages with innovative choreography and powerful narratives. Whether on stage or in the classroom, we use the power of the sole to define the soul. Step into our world and experience rhythm that moves beyond sound—it tells a story!

Artist Statement

SOLE Defined dancers put an exciting twist on percussive dance by turning their bodies into human drums. Their high-powered fusion of percussive dance, comedy, and audience participation is simply amazing!
