About this Artist

Pronouns: he/him

Master screen painter John Iampieri has been hand painting screens for businesses and homes for many years. Influenced by the traditional methods used by Baltimore screen painters, his work has been exhibited throughout Maryland. John’s screens have been in feature films as well as several TV commercials, magazines, and papers. In 2010, John’s successful screen painting workshop at Pocomoke Middle School was included in a feature on “The NBC Today Show,” with Anne Curry. In addition to sharing the history, tools, and techniques used in this art form, John Iampieri strives to teach students how works of art can express ideas, feelings, and meaning. John’s passion for screen painting is evident throughout every step of the project’s process. His programs — which are available to sites that are within a 2-hour drive from Ocean City, Maryland — can connect to any class curriculum from 1st grade and up with small screen projects to 60’ long screen murals which, as a legacy program, stay at your school for years to come.

Artist Statement

“It’s magic! Wow! How did you do that! Are we going to learn this painting technique?” These kinds of questions and many others fuel my fire! Having the opportunity to teach this 100-year old Baltimore-born folk art with children in the classroom is a unique opportunity for me to plant screen painting seeds! I love it! Let’s go, hon!

Testimonials

"John made the whole experience for every child memorable especially the students whose images were chosen for the screens. They felt their artwork was very valuable."

Dana Mills, Teacher, Mount Royal School

"This was truly an arts-integrated process for our third graders. The process of picture journaling their experiences with raising the terrapins has made that experience more memorable. The history of Poplar Island had more impact as it was explored through words and art. The students also learned Baltimore’s rich history in screen painting and now claim a piece of that tradition."
