Episode: Tableaus, Songs and Octopi!

In this episode, students will recreate the scenes from songs and stories to sequence the events and learn how certain words can signal the order of what happens.

Arts Extension:

While the teacher reads a story, students assume the role of different characters and create a virtual tableau.

Create a scene that tells the story of your favorite book or movie. It can even be a story that you created. To create this scene, cut out images from newspapers or used recycled materials to represent characters almost like a collage. Leave a small space on your paper to provide a brief summary of your tableau or picture. Be sure to use sequencing words like first, next, and then. Show your tableau to your friends or family and see if they can figure out what story your picture is telling.

This can be an interactive or teacher-led activity. In this lesson, students will learn how to sequence events in a story using the language of first, next, then last. Begin by asking students to think about all of the things they do in a day. They are welcome to call them out or you can go ‘around’ the group. You will probably notice that the students are sharing the events out of order. Share your screen and bring up a table that has 4 rectangular boxes side by side (a flowchart). At the bottom of your flow chart, have a list of events such as “I eat dinner,” “I brush my teeth,” “I read a bedtime story” and “I clean up my toys” or something like this. With students' help, drag and drop the events in the proper order. When finished, read aloud. First...Then...Next...Last…. You are welcome to model how to do this activity with a recipe as well and then finally you can progress to using a story.

Personal Narratives (possible two-day lesson)
Students should think about one happy memory-- just an event in time that they would like to write and/or draw about. Provide a few examples and non-examples of an event or brief experience for students like the time you rode a roller coaster, or the day you got the best triple scoop ice cream cone, or a non-example, the month it rained and you were so sad every day. Once students have selected their events/memory ask them to share some details about these events. Perhaps bring up on your screen the words, who? What? When? Where? And why? Ask students to think of these questions as it relates to their memory. So, who was there/with them? What were they doing? When did this happen...etc. And then on a sheet of paper divided into three sections, have students sketch out their stories by drawing what happened first, next, and last. Encourage students to share their stories by talking about the images they drew. From here, students can turn their images into sentences as they write about the event/memory.

Mad Lib
Create your own silly story mad lib where students fill in the blanks with colorful words to help tell a story. Before doing the mad lib activity, this short story The Word Collector is a fun way to get kids interested in words and their meaning. As students complete the mad libs, challenge them to share some really silly words on their own.
