Artist Statement
“Education doesn’t begin the first day of school but the first day of life. Reaching children’s hearts is just as important as reaching their minds. I believe in shaping children’s hearts and minds through the arts and because Drama involves all the senses, it motivates children to participate. Children learn by taking part. Sensory experiences, hands-on experiences light up the brain. With creative dramatics children can develop confidence and a feeling of self- worth. Identifying with others in real life or stories helps a child to reenact life patterns they see around them. When a group works together they are cooperating, sharing ideas and solving problems. Dramatic play encourages children to take risks and become active learners regardless of their abilities, language or cultural differences.”
In addition to being on our K-12 teaching artist roster, Katherine Lyons is also a Maryland Wolf Trap Early Childhood teaching artist. Learn more about our Early Childhood programs.
